Full Description

Within the eastern part of the access road strip a large ditch was revealed. This ditch measured 4.30m wide and 1.19m deep, and was orientated north-northwest to south-southeast.

It likely corresponded with feature that was clipped at its eastern end during the evaluation.

Material from digging ditch appeared to have been used to construct a bank on its eastern side.

This bank comprised a mid-reddish brown silty clay, measuring 2.10m wide and 0.35m thick. The initial fill of the ditch was likely a slumping event from the bank, comprising a mixed reddish brown/mid brown clayey silt, measuring 0.46m wide and 0.64m deep. It was sealed by 0.08m thick organic silty clay layer which likely represented soil formation over the bank and the top of the slump material.

There were then a series of natural silting events within the ditch. The lowermost was a mid-reddish brown silty clay, measuring 0.24m thick. It was sealed by a dark brown clayey silt, measuring 0.51m thick. The uppermost was a probable intentional backfill deposit, comprising mixed brown/reddish orange silty clay, measuring 0.43m deep.

Pottery sherds recovered from these three fills, dated from the early 12th to 13th century.

Environmental sampling of these deposits produced little of interest.

The edge of the ditch caught by the eastern end of an evaluation trench continued to the north-northwest through the site and was observed within the footings of the eastern building as well as within the strip of the access road at the northern end of the site. The alignment of this ditch is different from all the other linear ditches revealed on the site, potentially indicating a different phase of activity.

The presence of a bank along the side of the ditch suggests it served as a major boundary feature.
