Full Description

An evaluation trench was located in the north-western corner of the Phase 8 works area, and was
oriented north-east to south-west. The only feature exposed was pit base, towards the south-western end of the trench, which was difficult to excavate as it was so shallow and site conditions were extremely dry: the feature was approximately sub-circular, some 0.70m wide but no more than
0.03m deep, surviving only as a flat base rising to a gradual break of slope. The grey clay fill remnant contained frequent flint fragments, some of which were heat-affected. Four struck flakes were retrieved, with a fifth which was unworked but may have been a fragment from a hammerstone. One of these had been worked into a blade suitable for use as a hand tool, and was assessed as likely to be of earlier Neolithic date; the others were waste material from flint working and were not datable.
