Full Description
The outbuildings appear to have accumulated over a period, but documentary research shows them in their present plan form by the turn of the 19th century. While the crewyard arrangement for the shelter and overwintering of cattle appears to have represented a significant proportion of the activity of the farm, the large hand-threshing barn provides evidence of the arable activity of what was almost certainly a mixed farm. The increasing focus of the farm around the crewyard is the product of the more industrialised ‘high farming’ concept of agriculture, established after enclosure had taken place in a period when soil improvement was closely linked to cattle production and husbandry. Although the original buildings have lost most of their primary fixtures and fittings, their original layout and quality of construction, albeit with some alteration, allows them to be considered as a good example of a mid-19th century farm complex with its origins a century earlier. Threshing Barn: Two-storey, five-bay hand-threshing barn, with large door openings in the north and south sides. Appears to be the earliest building of the group. Door opening at the south side altered, while the doors at the north side were rescued from Park Farm, in Kneesall, when it was demolished in 1969-70. It Is built of orange/red brick (brick size: 9.-9." x 4.-4." x 2⅜-2.", 3 courses = 9.") in 3-course (some 4-course) English Garden Wall (EGW) bond. The bond is not entirely con-sistent throughout: some header courses stop and start. It has a cogged cornice and chamfered plinth.
