Full Description
The pit was partially exposed in the southern half of the third evaluation trench. It was circular in plan,
measuring 1.06m wide, over 0.5m long, by 0.27m deep, with steep concave sides and a concave base. It was filled with a deliberate backfill, comprising dark blue grey sandy silt with frequent charcoal inclusions, from which no finds were recovered.
An environmental sample from the fill, likely to be indicative of a dump of hearth waste material, contained a very small number of charred hazelnut (Corylus avellana) shell fragments alongside a large quantity of charcoal. A radiocarbon date was obtained from the charred hazelnut and charcoal producing a date of 1043 -1152±23 yr BP, placing the feature in the late Anglo-Saxon / medieval period.
No medieval remains were previously identified within the site; the pit likely relates to the medieval ridge and furrow are present to the south and north of the site.
