Full Description
Hayside Cottage was built as two semi-detached cottages under the same ownership with a property line denoted on earlier maps. The two-storey structure is built in red brick, currently covered in render with a concrete pantile roof and kneelers and with modern fenestration throughout. The two former cottages have been merged, however, a partially blocked back-to-back fireplace still denotes the earlier division between the two properties. Walls were not intrusively examined but it is presumed most of the elevations have retained their historic fabric. Earlier floorboards may be present beneath the carpets of the first floor, whereas earlier floor surfaces appear to have been replaced on the ground floor. Any historic ceiling material is most likely to have survived on the ground floor between the exposed timber joists. The property was extended in the 1990s – 2000s with a two-storey southwest wing and a conservatory to the southeast, these caused some removal of the historic fabric on the south elevation. Historic mapping suggests Hayside Cottage post-dates 1835 with a construction date of mid to late 19th century date. (1)
