Full Description

Toward the centre of an evaluation trench was a pit. The pit was oval in plan and measured 0.9m long and 0.18m deep; it had moderately steep sides and a flat base and contained two fills. The basal fill consisted of a moderately compact mid grey-brown sandy silt with orange-brown mottling. Overlying this was a moderately compact dark grey-brown silty clay fill with moderate charcoal inclusions. The basal fill was interpreted as the result of natural infilling, while the presence of large charcoal inclusions suggest that the upper fill represents intentional backfilling. The upper fill was sampled for paleoenvironmental analysis and yielded charcoal remains indicative of a dump of hearth waste material. No finds were recovered from the pit.
