Full Description

Three sherds of pottery recovered from topsoil and subsoil.

Two of the sherds are in a high fired Derbyshire ware type fabric (DBY) and date to AD150-350: a bodysherd from a subsoil context and a rim sherd from a jar with a curved rim from a topsoil context.

The other sherd is a rim fragment from a saggar in a post-medieval Midlands Purple fabric probably dating to the 15th-16th century AD. The sherd is clearly a rim fragment from a saggar on the basis of a vitrified cutaway beneath the rim. These vessels were used to protect more delicate vessels during firing within the kiln.
