Full Description

The late medieval phase of activity can be broadly dated to the 15th to 16th centuries and is represented by further pits and a linear boundary.

A ditch runs in a roughly east-west direction towards the northern half of the site and had silted with brown silty clay. Sherds of Brown Glazed Earthenware pottery were recovered, as well as cow, sheep, and pig bones, and a palaeoenvironmental sample contained traces of barley and wheat, as well as peas/beans, common hazel, charcoal and abundant coal. Part of this ditch was uncovered during the evaluation.

The first pit was 1.1m deep and contained pottery dating from 15-16th centuries, including a possible cross-join with pottery from the ditch, along with residual 13th-14th century pottery. A small amount of animal bone was recovered from this pit which consisted of the main domesticates.

A second pit could not be fully excavated due to its depth and when auguered proved to be 5m deep, and was interpreted as another well. This well was sub-circular in plan with near vertical sides, although the upper 0.76m of the cut was slightly concave. The profile of the cut suggests it was originally wood lined, with two fills likely to have been added as packing in the void behind the lining. The earliest of these packing deposits contained late 13th-15th century pottery as well as a cow bone exhibiting butchery marks. The earliest backfill encountered within this well contained pottery dating fom the 15th-16th centuries, and a soil sample from this deposit also contained the usual coal an charcoal fragments. This pit showed significant signs of animal burrowing which had left a large void within the fill of the pit.
