Full Description

The eastern 13 m of a trench contained four ditches, each containing Iron Age pottery and sealed by colluvium.

A curvilinear ditch (1.32 m wide and 1.38 m deep), aligned north to south in the east of the trench, contained two brownish grey sandy clay fills. The uppermost fill produced Iron Age shelly ware.

Another ditch (1 m wide and 0.36 m deep) was aligned north-west to south-east. It was truncated by a perpendicular (north-east to south-west aligned) ditch (maximum 0.95 m wide and 0.23 m deep). Both ditches had grey sandy/silty clay fills and produced Iron Age pottery.

Environmental samples from the two truncated ditches contained barley and wheat grains consistent with a later prehistoric or Romano-British date. Animal bone was recovered from all three with most of the identified bones from livestock, especially cattle, a few of which show signs of butchery. A fragment of horse radius was also recovered from one ditch and a femur from a species of duck from the other ditch.
