Full Description
An irregular pit was present in an evaluation trench. The pit had an approximate diameter of 1.6 m and was 0.21 m deep, with a single fill of pale grey clay which produced sherds of Romano-British greyware.
A ditch (maximum 1.51 m wide and 0.22 m deep) extended north-north-west to south-south-east across two trenches and correlated with a geophysical anomaly interpreted as ‘possible archaeology’. In one trench, the ditch was sealed by colluvium. In the other trench, the ditch had two brown silty clay fills, with only one recorded. A relatively rich assemblage of Romano-British pottery was recovered from the ditch in the second trench, alongside a probable coin, Romano-British CBM and animal bones. Again, grains were recovered from the ditch consistent with late prehistoric or Romano-British arable cultivation. The ditch extending across two trenches correlates with a linear geophysical anomaly interpreted as ‘possible archaeology’. Its continuation in the trench containin the pit was not identified by excavation.
