Full Description

One trench contained structural remains comprising a surface of unbonded handmade bricks surrounded by red brick demolition rubble. The extent of the rubble was probably detected by geophysical survey (interpreted as ‘increased magnetic response’). The dimensions of the bricks suggest an early post-medieval date of late-16th to 18th centuries. The surface is located in close proximity to a footpath shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1884.

A pit (1.70 x 0.65+ x 0.33 m) was incompletely exposed in another trench and had steep, concave sides and a concave base containing two fills rich in clinker of modern appearance (not retained). The pit may have been associated with a former field boundary shown on historic maps.

A ditch was aligned north-west to south-east and had a fill of mottled black to mid-brown silty clay. The ditch was sealed by colluvium. No finds were observed, however the ditch correlates with a boundary shown on historic maps and a geophysical anomaly interpreted as a field boundary. The boundary was not identified in other trenches that intersected it, however furrows on the same alignment were present in two other trenches.

Another ditch (maximum 1.81 m wide and 0.38 m deep) was seen in two trenches, aligned north-west to south-east. In one trench, the ditch was sealed by colluvium. The ditch correlates with a boundary depicted on historic maps as well as a geophysical anomaly interpreted as a field boundary. The eastern edge of the ditch was steeper than the west. No finds were present.
