Full Description

A sub-rectangular enclosure, measuring 50m by 60m, has been identified within the northern third of the survey. A weak, positive magnetic anomaly appears to subdivide this into two sections, the northernmost being relatively ‘quiet’ while the southern and larger of the subdivisions contains a number of features of interest. (1)

Within the enclosure is a series of probable rubbish and storage pits; the regular alignment of some of the pits suggests some could be large post pits for a structure (1)

In the south eastern corner are a pair of strong positive magnetic anomalies. These do not appear to have the magnetic strength and characteristics usually associated with burnt or fired features such as hearths or kilns and are most likely large pits. A further possible large pit has been detected to the north of the enclosure. (1)

A large number of small discrete pit-like anomalies was also detected; while not all of these may be archaeological, it seems likely that most are either rubbish or storage pits. Of particular interest is line of pit-like anomalies to the immediate west of the pit-like anomalies and the group of four anomalies which may identify post pits and hence possible structural elements (1)

A number of relatively magnetically weak, ditch-like anomalies emanate from the enclosure; their magnetic strength quickly diminishing until they can no longer be discerned. This is a typical habitation effect whereby features are less magnetically enhanced further away from any core of activity. On one side, the ditches are particularly faint, however it is possible to make out a potential pair of ditches which may flank a trackway or similar. (1)
