Full Description
Activity was concentrated loosely to the centre and south-west boundary of one evaluation area, for the most part comprising of linears and pits. The majority of the features showed extensive signs of truncation likely due to the extensive agricultural practices occurring in the Area.
The majority of the features encountered were especially truncated with few artefacts making interpretation difficult. Though with the presence of a struck flint and Roman Pottery ‘crumbs’ it is evident that the site has seen activity in both periods. A total of 15 linears were discovered along with three pits; 8 of the linears were noted to follow a similar orientation of north-east to south-west with similar dimensions. It is likely that these features are part of modern farming practices as gullys or possibly areas where farm machinery has sunk past the topsoil in wet conditions. Two of the ditches were observed to have V-shaped profile, the purpose of these is unknown. Although the v-shaped profile is characteristically Roman in design, the ditches may also represent drainage features dating to a later period. One pit is possibly prehistoric in origin, being used as a fire pit due to the heat affected stones. The purpose of the remaining five linears and two pits is unknown.
It is more than likely that several of the linears relate to post-medieval farming activities however without artefactual evidence it is impossible to specify which features are post-medieval. No fragments of post-medieval Pottery or other evidence were recovered during the works.
