Full Description
The original building is a traditional double range L shaped building indicated on the 1875 and 1880 plans. There is a C20 two storey flat roofed brick extension to the rear and adjoining C20 single storey extensions to the east side elevation and rear including conservatory and also a large car park to the rear within an enclosed site. The site is on a slight incline to the rear and is bordered by housing to the north and east. Attached to the pub is a C19 former single storey Cart shed/coach house and possibly stable however this was not originally attached with the gap between the pub and outbuilding in filled to connect the two. This is evidenced on plan and on elevation by the rendered walling facing the A38 and brick walling to the rear elevation. Upon entrance in to Mansfield this would have been the first coaching Inn en-route in to the town for travellers. The single storey vernacular building is of coursed rubble with a pan tile roof and internally there is evidence of a large rectangular opening (now infilled) with the timber lintel still in place. The walls are thick and the roof contains a series of ‘A’ frame trusses and staggered purlins with sawn timbers indicating a post 1840 building so perhaps not shown on the 1835 Sanderson plan although the Inn may be. There is evidence of stone buildings that would have been attached to the single storey cart shed in the form of 6 courses of stone walling running at right angles to the cart shed in a north-west direction. A tall brick wall now stands behind the low stone wall and marks the main boundary with the bus depot and a tall open sided lean-to with a corrugated metal roof abuts the stone and brick walls where previous structures once stood. Evidence of the previous buildings is shown on the 1875 plan indicating a range of 3 rectangular formed adjoining buildings that could well have been stables or similar given their size and shape as shown on plan. The public house is of two storeys with rendered elevations to the front and gable elevations and coursed stone wall to the rear parallel range both having slate roofs with gable stacks and a further ridge stack towards the eastern end of the main front range building. Windows are C20 casements and gutters are cast iron. The public house has also been extensively altered internally but the rectangular elongated plan form remains intact.
