Full Description

A piece of oolitic limestone carved with Anglo-Saxon interlace ornament was presented to Newark Museum. It came from a gravel pit immediately SE of S Muskham church (above grid ref) and probably derived from it. No other similar fragments can now be seen built into the masonry. The stone was part of an internal frieze and since two adjacent faces are decorated it must have come from an opening, for instance that between nave and chancel. It is enough to show that S Muskham had a stone church before the Conquest. (1)
See M3147 for church.
