Full Description

A 19th century shop unit, refronted 1939-40. The building appears to have been rebuilt in the 19th century and originally had three large windows at first-floor level and a traditional glazed shopfront with a curved glass entranceway (Newark Resource Centre ref. 1019). This was replaced following the sale of the property in 1939. The new owner’s S & H Morris’s Wallpaper Company advertised the opening of their ‘new, modern’ store in January 1940. The new frontage in the Moderne style used Vitrolite (a form of rolled, opaque glass) for cladding the façade, with metal windows. The upper floor may have been designed as a showroom, with the large window allowing good viewing of the wallpaper and other design materials. An aerial photograph showed the façade in 1947, indicating that the original shop front had a deeply recessed entrance and that the upper floor may had the ‘Morris’s’ brand name applied across the lower part of the window (Historic England Archive 35623_001). Bird’s Bakery occupied the building from the early 2000s, and the replacement shop front may belong to this phase. (1)
