Full Description
A broad (3.40m wide) linear feature which crossed the trench in its central part with N-S orientation. The ditch had moderately sloping, slightly concave sides, and a wide concave base. Its single fill consisted of very compact dark greyish red silty clay which incorporated abundant pebbles and cobbles. It produced two sherds from a vessel with a criss-crossed scored decoration, typical of the middle-later Iron Age in the region and five sherds of sandy-shelly pottery. Three fragments of animal bone only generically identified as mammalian were also recovered.
Its position and orientation closely match a linear anomaly, but no continuation of the ditch could be seen in the surrounding trenches and therefore it cannot be confirmed that the ditch belonged to a quadrangular enclosure, as suggested by geophysical survey.
