Full Description

A single N-S oriented ditch was exposed near the eastern end of the trench. This had an irregular profile, with steep undulating sides and a narrow concave base which was filled by a thin erosion layer of compact silty clay resulting from degradation of the ditch sides. Above it was also a deposit of compact clayey silt which incorporated charcoal flecks and cobbles. A fragment of Derbyshire Ware small jug (2nd – 3rd century) and five fragments of animal bone were recovered from it. The animal bones have been identified as belonging to cattle and other not specified mammals, and most probably derived from meat consumption; suggested by indications of butchering.

The ditch was recorded as lying beneath the subsoil, but a number of elements suggest that it was instead sealed by a colluvium which only survived in patches. If confirmed, the pottery from the ditch would then provide the terminus post quem for the formation of the colluvium
