Full Description

Although only partially visible, at least four of the pits appeared to be regularly distributed and possibly formed a double NW-SE oriented pit alignment. No other pits were uncovered in the nearby trenches that might confirm this alignment, but it is tempting to consider it as a continuation of the probably Neolithic double pit alignment investigated during the Phase 1 works area mitigation (Savage, Savage and Brocklehurst 2021, pp. 9-10). This raises the question of why no pits were recorded in the trenches excavated to the north-west of the evaluaiton trench along the presumed path of the previously recorded Phase 1 pit alignment. One possible explanation is that ploughing here has erased any traces of the pits, as in other evaluation trenches the natural geology lay directly beneath just 0.28-0.34m of agricultural topsoil. Besides, a number of furrows were also recorded, which also could have obliterated earlier archaeological features.
