Full Description

Two pits recorded in the same trench that recorded the possible pit alignment, but these are not included within the grouping.

Located north of the possible pit aligment.

The northernmost pit was the smallest of the exposed features with a diameter of 0.50m. It had steep concave sides and a concave base. Despite being relatively shallow (0.21m) it had two fills. The lowest consisted of redeposited natural clay, while the upper fill was a compact dark grey sandy silt with frequent pebbles; possibly the result of intentional backfilling.

South of this pit was a pit-like feature, whose interpretation remains uncertain as it was surrounded by traces of bioturbation which suggest the possibility of the ‘cut’ being a tree throw rather than a pit. Its shallow depth, only 0.10m, seems to support this interpretation, although its single fill was rather similar to the upper fill of the northerly pit,
believed to be the result of an intentional backfill.
