Full Description

Feature sits in woodland on spur on the SW facing side of a large plateau that makes up the West Leak Hills. Feature appears to have two 16-20m wide banks on NE side which are 30m apart and intervening ditch. Banks are c.40-50cm high. Inner bank appears to enclose whole feature with an area of c. 1.7 acres. Possible central high c. 60m in diameter. Shelf or ledge before steep slope to valley floor. Possible entranceway on NE side? Local Relief Model profile suggests banks are elevated c. 40-50cm above background slope. (1)

This feature is in-keeping with what Iron Age hill forts in the area seem to be like too, that promontory-type on a spur of land where the neck of the headland is altered with banks and ditches. On this same high ground with have ‘court hill’ and the Cuckoobush burial mound, and Winking Hill, which could be something anthropogenic, on the south-west spur of the high ground to the NW of this. And the next spur of high ground north is the one that curves around the top of Redhill, where the lidar indicates another possible promontory fort in the woods directly north of the Scheduled Monument. This feature is looking out over/integrated into an interesting landscape. (2)
