In 1936 one and a quarter acres of land was purchased from the city corporation to build a Jewish cemetery on the eastern side of Nottingham Southern Cemetery. Between 1937 and 1940 the main area was bounded by a high stone wall and an Ohel with Bet taharah were constructed by Frank Broadbent at the eastern end. The Ohel is constructed of brick, approximately 10m long and 5m wide with a hidden roof. The northern and southern sides have three long vertical strip windows and the eastern gable has a tall door under a segmental arch. The cemetery has many rows of Matzevah headstones each side of a central pathway. The first known burial was of Rosa Fonseca in 1940. The cemetery was extended to the south and east during the late 20th century. All the Matzevah in the extended areas are grouped to the south and east. Interestingly the orientation of the graves is slightly different in each area, although all retain a general east to west orientation. (2)
