Full Description
A Second World War 'Starfish' and 'QL' bombing decoy located at Barton in Fabis (SK 535 314). It was constructed as part of the 'A-series' of army decoys to deflect enemy bombing from Chilwell. This is referenced as being in use between 01-AUG-1941 and 12-MAR-1942. The site also operated as a 'Starfish' decoy for Nottingham, which is referenced as being operational between 01-AUG-1941 and 08-APR-1943. A 'QL' lighting decoy was added to the site as part of the 'C-series' of civilian decoys to protect the city of Nottingham. This is referenced as being active between 02-OCT-1942 and 01-MAY-1943. Further bombing decoy sites for Nottingham were located at Clipston (SK 643 337), Cropwell Butler (SK 653 364) and Lowdham (SK 650 455). (1)
Aerial photography shows that by 1978 the site had been given over to agricultural use and no features of the decoy survive. (2)
NGR concords with that given in source 1. The bombing decoys for Nottingham were decommissioned in 1944. (3)
