Dolomitic sandstone of Triassic Age has been extensively quarried at Gregory's Quarry (fromerly Lindly Quarry) in Mansfield. The stone, which is often known as Mansfield White, is first referred to in 1315, and it was used in the construction of Southwell Minster in 1337. in the 14th and 15th centuries it was used at Nottingham Castle, and in the 18th century it was used for the facade iof the Palladian Town Hall at Newark. It was chosen for the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament in 1839, but like Bolsover Stone, it could not meet the necessary demand. The site lies between Cromford Avenue, and the Southwell and Mansfield Railway. (2)

There are indications, from the material found at the Roman ‘villa’ site in Southwell, that the Romans were also exploiting the mineral resource around what later became the town of Mansfield. There is likely a Roman small town in the vicinity of medieval Mansfield. (3)
