Full Description
A Roman brooch was found by Mr. J. Simns whilst using a metal detector in the Harlow Wood area and is now in his possession. The brooch is of a type known as a dolphin, Collingwood type H. It is larger than usual measuring 6.47 cms in length and 4.79 cms across the arms. It is bronze and in good condition, only the pin and spring missing. Remains of the original tinning can be still seen in many areas along its length. Decoration takes the form of wavy lines which have been cast in when made and show some signs of wear on the central part of the bow. The catch-plate is decorated with fine incised lines made with a very fine engraving tool. This type of brooch is usually dated to the middle of the second century. (1)
NGR is rough.
