Full Description

A near complete Hallstatt bronze sword was found in "the River Trent near Newark". Bought by a Mr Kirk in the 1930s from a dealer who had bought it from a man working for the Trent Navigation Board. Sold on to Mr WJ Thompson, who donated it to Nottm Corporation. Now in NCM. (1)
Present location of find as above. Mr MacCormick has no additional information to hand but will consult early museum records and notify this section if anything relative is found. (2)
Dredged form the Trent, mid 1930s. Type Gundlingen, Variant B, Ewart Park, LBA. Dimensions: 667mm, max blade width 33mm. An elegant, leaf-shaped blade with flowing lines. One terminal corner broken off. Very battered on hilt and on bottom half of blade. Hilt cracked in places. Rivets 2:4, four in situ. Tip shortened thoguh regrinding in antiquity. (4)
Although given by (4), it is unclear why this find has been placed at Averham and so this location must be regarded with suspicion. (5)
