Full Description

Unearthed by bulldozer clearing topsoil for gravel pit at a point c 100yds NE of end of Crankley Lane. C17 pottery jug containing a hoard of 466 silver and 17 gold coins, 1546-1644. The jug also contained remains of a cloth bag with a beaded top, a silver thimble inscribed "PHEBE LOVE", a bronze trinket box, and silver sealing wax case with a crest and coat of arms on it. (1)
Records note 17 gold and 466 silver coins, all between 1542 and 1642, also one silver penny of Edward III, Treasure Trove. Purchased from the BM, Acc No 56-58, Acc Nos of the jug etc 27 to 31-58. The site falls in what is now a disused gravel pit, and is marked on the museum 6in at above grid ref. (3)
