Full Description
On the W side of the River Ryton, where a mill race ended in a wooded area marked by banks and hollows, a few stones, probably not in situ, are visible in the river bank. The farmer had recently dredged the river, and the dragline had brought up and deposited on the E bank a large pile of stone and brickwork. There were several masses of brickwork held together by a soft pinkish mortar, pantiles, and roughly dressed stones. There were also several pieces of edge runner stones and their trough. Five were segments, complete or fragmentary, of a circular trough of 10ft 3in outer diameter for grinding or crushing. Three fragmants of runner stone were found. All these fragments were of sandstone and all, from the mortar they carried, must have been re-used as building stones. No signs of a mill here on historic mapping. (1)
The spot indicated is at the N end of a small lake associated with Bilby Hall, shown on (2). The structure could have been for water control or perhaps a garden feature, demolished at the same time as the Hall in the late C19. The "mill leat" consists of remains of the earthworks retaining the W side of the lake. (3)
See M18245 for Bilby Hall.
