Full Description

The C13th pottery came mainly from a large, approximately circular pit (pit 154) and from several shallow features, probably the bottoms of pits largely destroyed by later activities. Pit 154 contained Torksey, shell-gritted, and green-glazed wares. Pottery of perhaps a slightly earlier date came from the construction trenches of a building (structure A) suggesting an early C13th date for this building. Only slight remains survived of this structure. A small part of another early structure (structure B) consisted of an L-shaped feature of orange clay set with small flat blocks of stone. This structure was overlain by at least two later buildings. The first survived only as a 2-metre length of neat ashlar walling. A great amount of roofing material was found in the C13th – C16th layers, some of it glazed, but none of the traces of building excavated gave any evidence for such substantial roofs. (1)
Stamford Ware, Torksey Ware and Nottingham Splashed Ware all present. (2)
