Maps (2) and (3) show a weir across the western branch (of the Trent), where the two channels divided, which would have had the effect of diverting water into the eastern (Newark) channel. … Mention of a lawsuit temp Eliz I obliging the Suttons to build a weir to "throw some share of water into the Newark branch".
