Militia Stores (War Dept). (1)

The Albert Street Barracks in Newark were a Victorian-era military installation built in 1857, located at the junction of Albert Street and Boundary Road. Functioning as a drill hall and base for the local militia and volunteer units, including the Sherwood Foresters, the site was demolished in 1974 to make way for new housing.

• 1857: The barracks were constructed during the Victorian era to serve as a drill hall and training ground
• Late 19th - Early 20th Centuries: The site acted as an active base for volunteer forces, the 4th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters, and later the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry
• Mid-20th Century: It continued to be used for military activities, including serving as a registration center for the Home Guard during WWII
• 1974: The Combined Police Authority considered the site for a new divisional headquarters. However, after the plans were dropped and the buildings became dilapidated, demolition began in September 1974.
