Full Description

The main ditch appears defensive, is deep and 11yds across. It curves from E to W at the N end and then runs straight to S. The straight section is duplicated to the W by a shallow ditch. No sign of foundations. (1)
This appears to be an old road to the manor (C17) by-passing the village. The slope ornament published to the S is landscaping. Despite the fact that the works are scheduled there appears to be no archaeological background of note. NCRO hold no documents alluding to this work. (2)
The earthworks are superimposed on a Med open field system and are thus later. The works are large, but are merely a close system with wide clay drainage dykes on a hill slope called "The Bog". W ditch with upcast on E and W on rising ground to the N. Slight turn of banks E on N and S side. Plan ignores other dykes which exist in the adjacent areas, but are clearly the same massive mode of drainage of the bog. Foundations of stone were recognised in the old orchard between Sunnybank Brickyard and Church Farm in the 1950s during grubbing out of trees operation. (3)
An unusual site; the ditches are 1.5m deep (max) and 4m wide and are on a hill slope - not enclosing the hill top but running away from it. No easy explanation is available. (4)
Morph: 156.4.1 ditch. (7)
Grid ref centred.
Descheduled 1998, was SAM 50.
