Full Description

Moat faintly visible on E side of field, filled with earth except where there is a small dried up pond. A brick arch c 1-1.5m across at the exposed end, probably end of a large drain. There is a lot of white limestone, some of it cut as from a building, lying about in the grazing fields. There are 2 foundation sites W of the filled in moat. The probe revealed substantial foundations. (1)
Nearby gravel pit (?) and natural looking lines in the same field. (2)
The owner of Moat Farm indicated the scheduled area to be centred at SK 6592 8669 (field name "Moat Field"). (3)
Within this field is a regular depression with a max depth of 1.7m at SK 6597 8669 (published "pond" OS 25in), running S and W from this feature is a slight non-portrayable scarp which probably indicates the former inner perimeter of an original moat; no extension can be traced elsewhere in the field. The general surface is very undulating obviously covering buried foundations, and stone is protruding in places. The scheduling forbids ploughing and the field is under rough pasture. As far as the owner is aware the Inspectorate have no plans for excavation. The general impression is of an original moated work that has been under pasture for a great many years. The CRO have no historical information relating to an early residence here. (3)
In 1983 an aisled barn was built to the E of existing farm buildings, extending onto the line of the scheduled area. There is very little evidence of stonework on the surface now. (5) Descheduled 1992 (was SAM 55).
