Full Description

2 stones of coarse gritstone, one being a Ro altar and the other supposed to be sepulchral, were found in a sand-pit near White's Bridge in 1718 and recorded by Ella, Gough and Stukeley. Subsequently they were used for a time in steps from the river to an inn at Littleborough. The altar is now at Osberton Hall, the other stone having disappeared. (2)
The altar is in the possession of Capt EWS Foljambe of Osberton Hall. Inscription ..../..../..../E.../lib (ertus) aram C (..) A. (3)
White's Bridge or White-bridg as noted by Ella is that at SK 8199 8277, humps and hollows of old sand pit can be seen at above grid ref. (4)
