Full Description

A few years ago (c 1895) 2 stones with Anglo-Saxon carving (strap ornament) were found amoung farm buildings at Coates. In the possession of WH Mason of Retford. Identified as fragments of a grave cover(s) by the Bishop of Bristol, but as cross fragments by Mr Stevenson. The pieces appear to have been brought to Coates with other building stone. (1) (2) (3)
Lady W Mason of Morton Hall said material held by her grandfather was distributed by him to various museums about the country but she has no record of this. (4)
Stones now appear to be lost. (5)
3 farms in Coates - unclear which is meant, OS grid ref given. SK 8204 8148 also mentioned.
