Full Description

2 parallel linear features, each consisting of 2 parallel lines. (1)
APs show more complicated picture - area of extensive field system with trackways and rectangular and square enclosures. (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8)
Clearly defined cropmarks of field boundaries are visible on the slope down from Ruins Plantation towards the river. Field areas vary between 0.9 and 4.3Ha. At SK 630906 and SK 633908 are 2 isolated enclosures, both 0.1Ha in area and both attached to the same long boundary. A "lane" runs through the fields and can be traced for 1.8km. Commencing at SK 631905, it goes down the slope and has a central rut. Near the A614 road it widens and runs into a very large field or enclosure, which is c 1.8Ha in area and has an enclosure of 0.5Ha attached to its S side (see also L 5054). The distance between the side ditches is normally c 7m, though near SK 636908 it expands to 15m (see L 5055 for section of lane). Boundaries of square fields are visible on arable land between Ruins Plantation and the colliery sports ground. Field areas are 1.2 and 1.3Ha. The plan is incomplete, and it is possible that there were originally important ancient sites on land now occupied by the colliery and the adjacent housing estates of Bircotes, which expand the built up area of the village of Harworth. Morph: 96.4.1 Roman field system, 96.4.2-3 Roman enclosures, 96.4.9-11 Roman pound. (10)
See L 5054- continuation to SE (across road), L 5055 - NE, L 5059 - N. See L 5060 for finds, L 5089, L 5090 for cropmarks to W.
