Full Description

Linear features, including a pair of ditches over 1.5km long, ? trackway, continuing from L5053 to L5056. Possible rectangular enclosures. When the site was visited, the line of the lane could be seen as a slight raised strip between two depressions in a crop of spring wheat in the field to the south of the disused railway embankment. A cutting, 11m x 1m, was excavated across the feature on the north side of the embankment. The ditches were 5.75m apart, and different in shape and size, the eastern ditch having an angular profile while the western one was more rounded. No finds were made during the excavations. The upper part of the ditches had been truncated by modern ploughing, which would have removed any trace of metalling, trampling or camber in the interval between them. The excavation provided no conclusive proof that the pair of ditches defined a lane. (1)
