Full Description
Roman Bank, Bawtry. Mr HE Baker in 1937 cut the bank in 14 places to the depth of a couple of feet, and scores of probes were made without hitting any paved road. (1) (2)
It seems unlikely that this refers to Roman Bank, Scrooby ... Another feature in Bawtry is known as the "Roman Bank". This is published at above grid ref as "Barrier Bank". It appears to be no more than a flood bank for the River Idle, an opinion shared by Mr J Lidstor, Asst Curator of Doncaster Museum. Mr HE Baker could not be contacted. (3) (4)
