Full Description

Beacon Hill. No local information or repute of beacon; perambulation and research negative. (1)
It is generally agreed that the last element of Bassetlaw was originally Old English hlaw (hill or mound). The Bassetlaw wapentake thus derives its name from a particular hill. Despite its modest height above sea level, Beacon Hill is sufficiently striking to permit the conclusion that it is the hill formerly known as Bassetlaw. The importance of the hill probably goes back further still, into the period of the Anglo-Saxon settlement. (2)
