Full Description

A middle BA rapier of highly accomplished and unusual design was retrieved during gravel quarrying near Langford in November 1991. The rapier was recovered from a conveyor belt by quarry workers, after passing though a crusher, and hence the exact location and context of the object remain uncertain. The blade is 450mm long and of ogival outline, with sharp bevelled edges. The butt is rounded, and was pierced originally by 2 pairs of closely spaced rivet holes, 8-9mm apart. A rare example of a British early Middle BA Group II rapier. (1)
See L11252 for palstave, L11248 for bones from nearby.
