Morph: 188.16.1 linear feature (4)
The farmer said that material dug from a large pond was dumped over irregular earthwork features here. (5)
A long machine-excavated trench (4a) was positioned to test for cropmark features. At the N end an E-W ditch 1.5m wide and at least 0.5m deep was excavated which produced 26 sherds of Romano-British pottery. Immediately N was a pit which contained post-medieval pottery. A further NE-SW ditch approximately 0.8m wide and at least 0.35m deep produced a further 2 sherds of Romano-British pottery. Towards the S end of the trench, a series of four parallel NE-SW gullies were excavated. A second machine-excavated trench (4b) was opened in field 4 to examine a rectangular double-ditch enclosure, seen as a cropmark in air photographs. One of the double-ditches was located within the excavation area which was 1.40m wide and 1.30m deep. It had a steeply V profile and contained 4 sherds of Romano-British pottery. (6)
See L8343, L8345, L8322, & L8350 for associated cropmarks.
See L11108 for lava quern.
