Full Description

Roman pottery was found in a gravel pit between Bryans Close Lane and the disused railway, in 1971. A single body sherd in hard gritty grey ware was deposited in Doncaster Museum; further material may have gone to Lincoln Museum. The site is noted as "now destroyed". (1) (2)
This may be a mis-siting. OS map of 1956 marks "Roman pottery found" at this site (ie pre 1971) and the later find may have been associated with this known findspot. However, the description given by the OS is for the finds from the sand pit at L5049. No map marks a sand/gravel pit at this location, though there are several surrounding it. (3)
