Full Description
Base of pot found during gravel quarrying at above grid ref, 0.5m above the floor of the pit and within black river silt re-deposited during river movement. The original site would be from the top levels of the flood plain or flood plain terrace, probably within a few hundred metres upstream of the present position. Comment by J May (as below, see also parish file). (1)
Early IA pottery base. It is dark grey, hand-made, with sparse, coarse grit filler. There is vertical, external finger-smoothing and grass markings on the underside. (2)
See L968 for cross refs.
