Abstract/Summary
Gateford Park is situated on the A60 on low lying ground, north-west of Worksop. Information from the Nottinghamshire County Council Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) refers to extensive crop marks in this area, identified by aerial photography. A watching brief was required following the decision to construct houses on the area. The proposed development of six plots would cut through crop marks
resembling an enclosure and a field boundary and any archaeological features would have been damaged or destroyed by the work.
The trenches were cut between 1.50 - 0.50 metres deep and 0.70 metres wide.
The watching brief revealed nothing of archaeological interest. Prior to the area being developed, the land was used for arable farming and it is possible that deep ploughing may have already destroyed any archaeology present.
