Abstract/Summary
To fulfil the requirements of a planning application ULAS were commissioned by Clegg Construction to carry out a watching brief during ground-works at Arrival Square, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
A Neolithic stone axe was found in the area and the site sits close to medieval churches. The site was previously a car park, and though it was known to have had alternate use in the past the site was considered to have archaeological potential, hence the requirement for a watching brief.
An archaeologist attended the site for 3 days whilst the ground reduction down to finished excavation levels was carried out. The report states that the watching brief revealed that the site had been built up at the northern end to extend the area and build the car park. The report states that the rest of the site consisted of make up layers of re-deposited sand and soil, most likely the remnants of the terrace on which the original station approach road was built. The watching brief revealed no archaeological finds.
The report contains a map of the site.
