Abstract/Summary
An Archaeological Watching brief of groundwork was carried out during the removal of petrol tanks and demolition of above ground structures present on the site. Further work included overburden and ground reduction and subsurface clearance of foundations of earlier properties. The report states that no significant archaeological finds or deposits were observed.
The site has been previously been used as a petrol station and other buildings, therefore top/sub soil has previously been disturbed/reduced. Prior construction may have truncated archaeological horizons which could have been present beforehand.
“Groundwork in plot 2 involved the removal of subsurface petrol tanks. This consisted of breaking out the hard standing of the former petrol station and garage forecourt followed by extraction of the petrol tanks. These consisted of 8000, 1500 and 600 gallon tanks, surrounded by concrete shrouds and located within a large subsurface void backfilled with natural clay, modern hard-core, gravel and concrete”.
The report contains images of the works and site plans.
