Abstract/Summary
Archaeological Research Services was commissioned by Sir Jack Whitaker of Tiln Farms Ltd.
to undertake archaeological trial trenching on land off Sutton Lane, Sutton-cum-Lound,
Nottinghamshire, DN22 8PY. The project formed part of pre-determination works in
support of a planning application for residential development to the west of Sutton Lane.
The site lies within a rural landscape that was densely settled during the late-Iron Age and
Romano-British period with field systems and potential settlements sites attested by crop
marks in the surrounding area.
The evaluation was undertaken on 19th and 20th March 2019 in accordance with a Written
Scheme of Investigation agreed in advance with the Archaeological Planning Advisor to
Bassetlaw District Council.
The evaluation comprised two trenches which were targeted to assess the presence or
absence of archaeology in the area designated for groundworks within the proposed
development area. Two shallow pits were identified in Trench 1, both of which contained
charcoal rich fills, and are thought to represent refuse pits for the disposal of
biodegradable waste associated with settlement and agricultural activities.
