Abstract/Summary

No archaeological features or grave cuts were noted during the watching brief. The pottery dates from the medieval to the post-medieval period which does correspond to the use of this area as a churchyard. The mix of material also shows that disturbance has likely happened on more than one occasion over a long period of time. The bones recovered from the digging of the footing do not represent in situ burials and had been previously disturbed. Previous damage was evident on the bones and some slight further damage was caused during their recovery. The MNI of the bones recovered is six, comprising four adults and two juveniles. Of the adults, one is a robust male 20-25, two are female and one is unsexed. Of the latter three, one was aged 25-35. Another of the adults could be in an older age category if the endentulous mandible is considered to be age related although this is not certain. The juveniles were aged 4-8 yrs and <1 yr old. All of the adults had dental pathology showing in the mandibles and maxillae. Pelvis fragments and vertebrae show signs of early osteo-arthritis of the hips and spine although these cannot be confidently attributed to the same individual. No bones of any of the individuals show any pathology that could have been a cause of death. The graveyard has evidently been in use a long time and has seen changes such as landscaping and laying new paths. Previous works, and moving of burials, may account for the amount of disarticulated bone and abraded pottery sherds that were found in this foundation trench.
