Abstract/Summary

Trent & Peak Archaeological Unit was approached to provide a brief appraisal of the potential for future archaeological investigation at the Moor Pond Wood Project site at Papplewick. The Project is a Local Heritage Initiative (LHI) grant-aided scheme for the conservation, enhancement and presentation of Moor Pond Wood, an area to the west of the village that incorporates remnant historic features relating to a complex water management system created to help provide power to a series of late 18th century cotton mills. The report details 33 sites of interest in the study area, with 8 of them being reccomended for future investigation.

Description

The report concluded there is no discernable threat to the various parts of the water management system and any future archaeological work would be for mainly research purposes, although with major spin-off benefits for local site management and for informing the public. While the mills and related sites are planned, details about how they operated are still unknown, and are worthy of future investigation.
