Abstract/Summary
An archaeological surface artefact collection survey was undertaken on land to the north of Hawton Lane as part of the A46 Newark to Widmerpool Improvement.
A small number of late Palaeolithic/ Mesolithic blades; Mesolithic cores; and Mesolithic bladelets were recovered although the numbers were not great enough to suggest a concentration or in situ scatter. The majority of the recovered worked flints were undiagnostic and could only be categorised as being broadly prehistoric in date. A low level of pottery dating to the Iron Age, Roman and medieval periods was recovered across the survey area. There was a prevalence of post-medieval and modern pottery across the site.
Overall, the site produced a ‘background noise’ of archaeological material that has migrated due to continuous agricultural interference.
